For almost twenty years, I was a full time news photographer. My photos have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Southern Living, and dozens of other leading magazines and newspaper, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and many others. For 12 years I worked at the News & Observer in Raleigh, until 1999 when I decided to begin my freelance career. While I was at the paper I was named North Carolina Photographer of the Year six times and have won hundreds of awards on the local, state, regional, national and international levels. I have been fortunate to have covered events such as The 1996 Olympics, several NCAA Final Fours, nine ACC basketball tournaments, two Presidential inaugurations, three Kentucky Derby's and many other major news events in the last decade. I have covered all types of assignments, from devastating hurricanes on the coast to swim lessons for babies. From celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Jordan to ordinary people who made a difference in their own neighborhood. Over all of the years I have worked, I have always sought to treat my subjects with respect and honesty. My goal has always been to bring back a photo or set of photos that really show what happened, photographed in a way that elicits an emotional response from the viewer. I prefer to be the casual observer, allowing my subjects to relax and be themselves. It is in that way that I can make photographs that accurately portray not only what they looked like, but how they felt. Real people, real moments!
