David Key, a resident of Hampstead, is a Sound Artist, creating original works in the medium of sound. David is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, performing on a variety of wooden flutes, frame drum, and soprano saxophone. He is a composer, performer, and sound healer, performing in concert, providing music for weddings and other ceremonies, live music for yoga classes, musical commentaries on artwork at galleries, and creating healing Sound Medicine sessions. His music is available on CDs on his own independent label, can be heard in performance by himself and others, and may be purchased online at CDBaby.com. His music is also available at iTunes, Rhapsody, and other online sites.
A classically trained saxophonist with a Master's degree in music, David has been creative as a teacher of music, nurturing young musicians from kindergarten through college. Along the way, he wrote a textbook published by Prentice Hall, "The Creation and Re-Creation of Music." He presently teaches at Cape Fear Community College and at Sea Sharp Music Academy.
David has created improvised chamber music in the duo Starling, performed original Latin-influenced jazz in the Joe Parillo Ensemble, done a concert tour of South Korea performing with the Rhode Island Saxophone Quartet, and performed as a soloist at The Kripalu Institute. A 2004 Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar, David traveled to Japan to study the culture and educational system of that country. While there, he re-connected with his long-held desire to learn the shakuhachi bamboo flute.
David has spent the last 15 years exploring world music, wooden flutes, sound and healing, meditation, and Native American spirituality. The music he creates combines drumming heartbeats, powerful wooden flute melodies, field recordings of wind, rain, peeper frogs, and ocean waves, and any sounds that feel like they fit, no matter how unusual. His music often comes from a place of meditation, or is improvised in Sound Medicine sessions or in the studio, allowing the creative process to direct the outcome.
In individual and group Sound Medicine sessions, clients are bathed in flute, drum, and vocal sounds. Healing vibrations are felt in the body, and energy centers are cleared and aligned. A deep meditative state is created as David intuitively improvises melodies that are right for each person, in that moment. A Sound Medicine session can relieve stress, strengthen the immune system, and provide deep relaxation. David is available for Sound Medicine sessions at McKay Healing Arts, in Wilmington.
David performs as a soloist at libraries, healing centers, art galleries, and workshops, at concert venues, for yoga classes, and for weddings and other ceremonies. His original compositions leave his listeners relaxed and energized at the same time, and his welcoming style helps his audiences have fun with new sounds and new experiences.
In performances, Sound Medicine sessions, workshops, and recordings, David uses positive intention, focused breath, and musical artistry to create sounds and music that are healing and uplifting.
