W.A.A. Call for Artists: 28th Juried Spring Art Show Deadline March 15th

Local artists are being encouraged to enter a major art show which features more than four-thousand dollars in prizes. The Juried Spring Art Show and Sale -- sponsored by the Wilmington Art Association -- is held annually during the Azalea Festival and is open to both amateur and professional artists. This year's show is slated for April 9 - 11 at St. James Episcopal Church on Dock Street in Wilmington, but interested artists need to register no later than March 15. The show is open to all artists, 18 and over and any two-dimensional artwork may be submitted with the exception of computer-generated works and stained glass. Non-refundable entry fees are 30-dollars for W.A.A. members and 40-dollars for non-members. For a copy of the show's "Prospectus," including detailed entry guidelines, artists should visit the W.A.A. website at: www.wilmington-art.org. The 28th Annual Juried Spring Art Show and Sale will be judged by Paula Frizbe, a well-known professional artist and teacher from Franklin, Tennessee. On being an artist, Frizbe says: "To me, the whole idea of creating art is to respond to and then convey to others the world around us... The world is infinitely complex, and the continual search for and the surprise discovery of its mysteries is my motivation as an artist." The Wilmington Art Association has sponsored its art show during the Azalea Festival for the past 27-years. The W.A.A. is a non-profit organization seeking to educate its members and the public in the fine arts and provides community outreach services. Members have an outlet for their creative expression through the Association's gallery at 616 Castle Street in Wilmington. The gallery is open Tuesday thru Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The World in Black and White at the Wilmington Art Gallery through March 25th

Black and white photography from around the world will be on display at the Wilmington Art Association's Gallery through the month of March. The exhibit is entitled "The World in Black and White" and features fine art photography by Gordon C. Webb. The local artist relocated to the Wilmington area after retiring from teaching at Ithaca College (Ithaca, N.Y.). Before entering academia, Webb spent twenty years as a radio-television producer and scriptwriter and some of the work currently on display resulted from a television project filmed in China in the late 1980's. "We were there just prior to the 'Tiananmen Square uprising' and you could feel the tension among college students we spoke with" Webb said. "We were traveling with the Cornell University Glee Club who were on an Asian tour in January 1989, and young Chinese people kept asking us what it was like in the U.S." One of Webb's photos shows a woman and a uniformed man walking across the Tiananmen Square in a snow storm, and he says he can't help but wonder if the soldier was involved in the violence later that year. Most of Webb's other work is less topical -- including landscapes, informal portraits and several photographs taken in and around Wilmington. His black and white images explore the subtleties of light and shadow… environmental elements (fog, haze, etc.)… unique camera angles and unusual composition. "The World in Black and White" will be on display through March 25 at the Wilmington Art Gallery, 616 Castle Street. The Gallery is open Tuesday thru Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
