 Full Moon Friday 7:00PM - 11:00PM
Full Moon Rising

Una Luna is pleased to host you at our new location in Chandler's Wharf Warehouse.

This moon we are over the moon to welcome Allan Nance as our featured artist.

Born in Greensboro, North Carolina on Christmas Eve, 1940, Allan attended North Carolina State University majoring in Design and Industrial Management. He began painting as a hobby in 1970 after receiving a set of acrylic paints for his birthday. However, it was not long until Allan realized that art was his "calling". A self-taught artist, he honed his God given talent through practice and self-study of fine art and painting techniques. In 1973, Allan left his salaried position to devote his life to painting

His unique method of using the egg tempera technique with acrylic paints and attention to detail, has earned him national acclaim and awards. His work is also included in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad. Allan lived in Ruffin, North Carolina for twenty eight years before moving to Wilmington in 2006 where he lives with his wife, Yvonne.

The entertainment this moon is provided by “Spider” Mike Bochey

“Spider” Mike started playing guitar when he was fourteen. Influenced by a multitude of folk and blues artists popular at the turn of the twentieth century, Mike first was turned on by the blues by listening to Mississippi John Hurt. Mike introduced himself to Mississippi John at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Here, he watched him play and with a little help from John, Mike started fingerpickin’ John’s Songs. Mike also had the opportunity to hear and see many of the blues and folk music greats perform. As a result, he learned the old school finger picking style that separates him from many of the solo performers in the Wilmington NC area.

In 1980 Mike moved to Wilmington NC. Family and career commitments kept him from being an active musician but the magical experiences of his youth still inspired him to play with friends and at an occasional open mic. In 2003, encouraged by several professional musicians, Mike entered the Cape Fear Blues Challenge, and in 2004 placed second in the solo competition. In 2006, he won the solo competition and the honor of representing the society at the national event in Memphis. His playing warranted him exposure on a satellite radio show exhibiting the International Blues Competition.

In 2008, at the request of his audiences, Mike produced his first album. The album was recorded live so that it captures the pure, raw energy of the original tunes. The Cape Fear Blues Society entered the album in the IBC for “Best Self Produced CD”.

“Spider” Mike can be found playing at many of the local venues in the Wilmington NC area including many of the local festival held in Southeastern North Carolina. Captivating and endearing, “Spider” Mike Bochey is a true ambassador of the blues as he picks out the old time blues played at the turn of the twentieth century.

 World-Maker for Diego, Manny, and Sid 10:00AM - 6:00PM
An exhibition of landscape paintings by Xiangyuan (Jay) Jie featuring imagery of both the eastern and western United States runs through March 20th at Walls Fine Art Gallery in Wilmington, NC.

Xiangyuan (Jay) Jie, a native of Hunan, China, now lives and paints full time in Atlanta, GA. He received his formal art education in China, Europe, and the United States. In 1982, Jie graduated with a BFA in theater set design from the Central Academy of Drama at Beijing. He then taught art and design at Hunan University. In 1987 and 1988, Jie studied and lectured at the Ecole Cantonal d’ Art de Lausanne, Switzerland. Upon immigrating to the United States, Jie taught at Auburn University as a visiting professor. In 1995, he received his master’s degree in industrial design from Georgia Tech. Since then, he had been working at the Disney and Fox Feature Animation studios as a background stylist and visual development artist. His screen credits include Mulan, Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown.

“Xiangyuan Jie (affectionately called Master Jay) painted a stunning color script that helped guide us in painting our keys. Master Jay is probably the best painter I have ever met (we don't throw around the title "Master" to just anyone). Sitting next to him was kind of like going to graduate school.” –Robert MacKensie on “Ice Age, The Meltdown”

Jay’s expressive painterly approach is largely influenced by the direct and fluent style of early European, Russian, and American impressionists and realists. Jie enjoys painting people from life settings and landscape on location wherever he goes on the road trips.

“There’s a hallway on the studio’s third floor where Disney artists show their own work in a gallery setting, and one day the wandering directors were exposed to the work of Xiangyuan (“Jay”) Jie. “Bob and I knew we wanted a real rugged, artful-looking film,” says Blaise. “We didn’t want it to be really detailed and highly rendered.” When they saw Jie’s bold, impressionistic landscapes, they were hooked. “You could see every brushstroke,” says Bob Walker, “and the way he handles color is incredible.” The rest of the unit was immediately trained to paint like Jie.” –Taylor Jessen, on the film “Brother Bear”
Jay’s artworks have been featured in national and regional juried art exhibitions around the country. He has been published in Artist’s Magazine and International Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine. He also received second place in 2003 and the honor award in 2002 and 2005 at the international competition sponsored by the Portrait Society of America. Jie also received third prize in Artist Magazine’s portrait competition in 1999. His landscape paintings were selected for the Top 100 in the 2002 and 2003 “Art for the Parks” competition, and received Landscape Art Award and Grand Teton Natural History Association Purchase Award and Judge's Choice Award.
Xiangyuan (Jay) Jie is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America and Plein Air Painters of West.
Jay’s book, “Landscape Works of China” is available for sale at the gallery throughout the exhibition.

Nunsense

The Little Sisters of Hoboken have been struck by tragedy – 52 of the sisters have succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God. Even worse, the nunnery’s coffers lack the funds to pay for a decent burial for all of the sisters, leaving four of them in cold storage. To raise the money, the remaining “Little Hobos” have decided to parade their talents in a variety show – an outrageously wacky show packed with music, dancing, jokes, and nun-puns. This night of inspired madness is quick-paced, raucous, touching, and totally wonderful. Winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Off-Broadway Musical, Nunsense has become a must-see international phenomenon, proving conclusively that nun rhymes with fun!

Though tickets are available through the Center Box Office, performances are held at the Scottish Rite Theatre, located at 1415 South 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401. Click here for directions.
